RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg unfailingly championed women’s rights and adjudicated in favor of the poor, the disadvantaged, for diverse people and for equal justice and civil rights for all. It was my honor to have presented her with the National Association of Women Lawyer’s Arabella Babb Mansfield Award in 2002. Her legacy will last forever. Rest in Power, Justice Ginsburg.
May 2024: Ellen Pansky was the keynote speaker at the 2024 Hawthorne High School Senior Awards Night ceremony, where she also presented her annual scholarship to UCLA Admittee Camilla Barajas. Congratulations Camilla on your many accomplishments!

August 2020: Ellen Pansky organized and moderated an MCLE panel entitled “What Does It Take to Be a Lawyer In The Time Of Pandemic” at the APRL virtual mid-year meeting on August 14, 2020. This panel included Judith Gunderson of the National Conference of Bar Examiners, Professor Leslie C. Levin, University of Connecticut School of Law, and Professor Richard Zitrin, UC Hastings School of Law. The panel explored emerging issues relating to the admission to practice law, including conditional and limited admissions, reduced bar passage criteria, the proper role of character and fitness inquiries in admissions cases, and whether Covid-19 pandemic travel restrictions should affect the definition of UPL by lawyers.

In the past year, Ellen Pansky served as the testifying legal ethics expert witness on behalf of plaintiffs/former clients in three separate legal malpractice/breach of fiduciary cases:
- In one case resolved through private arbitration, the lawyer was found to have engaged in several ethical breaches, including UPL, and ordered to disgorge hundreds of thousands of dollars of previously paid legal fees, to forfeit unpaid fees and to pay attorney fees and costs.
- In a second class action case tried before a federal district court judge, the final judgment ordered the lawyer defendant to pay $12 Million to the class, citing Ellen’s testimony in the decision.
- In a third matter, following trial before a Los Angeles Superior Court judge, the lawyer defendant was found culpable of numerous serious breaches of legal ethics including failure to hold disputed funds in trust and failure to account for client funds. The judgment required the lawyer defendant to disgorge over $200,000 in legal fees.

August 2016: On August 4, 2016 at its annual meeting in San Francisco, the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers, through its president Lynda Shely, presented Ellen Pansky with the prestigious Charles W. Kettlewell Legal Ethics Advisor Award.
In April 2010, the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers (APRL), the nation’s largest association of legal ethics practitioners, presented its first Charles W. Kettlewell Legal Ethics Advisor Award to a lawyer who has demonstrated excellence in and dedication to the field of legal ethics and professional responsibility, by representing, advising, educating or mentoring lawyers. APRL was founded in 1990 primarily by lawyers who represent and advise lawyers, and the Kettlewell Award is intended to recognize superior lifetime achievement and contribution in the “law of lawyering” field.
The Kettlewell Award is named in honor and in memory of Charles W. (“Chuck”) Kettlewell, who was one of APRL’s founders and who served as its first President. Kettlewell, who passed away in 2005 in the prime of an outstanding career, was an internationally known expert in professional responsibility and legal ethics, who received the ABA’s Michael Franck Professional Responsibility Award, in recognition of his wide-ranging lifetime contributions to the field of legal ethics.
The Kettlewell Award has been presented to only four awardees to date, including Ms. Pansky. Ellen is supremely honored to have received this honor, in the name of her close and dear friend, Chuck Kettlewell.

May 2012: Ellen A. Pansky attended the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers Sixth International Meeting in Istanbul, Turkey, on May 2-4, 2012. Ellen Pansky led the traditional Roundtable Discussion with two accomplished Turkish women attorneys, Bilge Kockaya and Habibe Iyimayi Kayaaslan. She met with the Dean of Yeditepe University’s School of Law, and with faculty from both Yeditepe’s law school as well as other Turkish law schools, concerning legal issues of importance in Turkey today. She was given a tour of Istanbul’s new courthouse by a local prosecutor and Yeditepe University law school graduate.
February 2012: Ellen Pansky participated in the National Association of Women Lawyers 2012 Mid-Year Program, “Reaching For The Stars.” In addition to serving as panelist on the CLE program, “Effective Networking: New Tools In A New Era In Law”, Ms. Pansky served as a member of the programming committee. The compelling day-long event and luncheon honoring Hon. Dorothy W. Nelson and Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. was attended by over 200 people.
