August 2016: On August 4, 2016 at its annual meeting in San Francisco, the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers, through its president Lynda Shely, presented Ellen Pansky with the prestigious Charles W. Kettlewell Legal Ethics Advisor Award.

In April 2010, the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers (APRL), the nation’s largest association of legal ethics practitioners, presented its first Charles W. Kettlewell Legal Ethics Advisor Award to a lawyer who has demonstrated excellence in and dedication to the field of legal ethics and professional responsibility, by representing, advising, educating or mentoring lawyers. APRL was founded in 1990 primarily by lawyers who represent and advise lawyers, and the Kettlewell Award is intended to recognize superior lifetime achievement and contribution in the “law of lawyering” field.

The Kettlewell Award is named in honor and in memory of Charles W. (“Chuck”) Kettlewell, who was one of APRL’s founders and who served as its first President. Kettlewell, who passed away in 2005 in the prime of an outstanding career, was an internationally known expert in professional responsibility and legal ethics, who received the ABA’s Michael Franck Professional Responsibility Award, in recognition of his wide-ranging lifetime contributions to the field of legal ethics.

The Kettlewell Award has been presented to only four awardees to date, including Ms. Pansky. Ellen is supremely honored to have received this honor, in the name of her close and dear friend, Chuck Kettlewell.

February 2016: Ellen Pansky was a panelist at the APRL midyear meeting in San Diego on February 5, 2016. The program, entitled “Where Duties of Client Loyalty & Confidentiality Collide: Joint Representations in a Single Matter Revisited”, follows on a well-received session at the ABA National Conference of Professional Responsibility in Denver last May, with an interactive panel exploring in depth the confidentiality, conflict of interest, and other professional responsibility issues that arise when lawyers seek to represent multiple clients in a single matter.

August, 2015: Jim Ham has been appointed Chair of the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers’ Public Statements Committee. The Public Statements Committee is a standing committee of the Association. Jim also serves as the APRL Board Liaison to the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Professional Discipline.

August, 2015: Jim Ham gave an MCLE presentation to Knapp Peterson & Clarke, located in Glendale, California. The topics included understanding the ethics of social media, client trust accounting, and recent events in legal ethics.

February 2015: Jim Ham was a panelist at a presentation by the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers held in Houston, Texas this month. The presentation was titled “The Times, They Are A Changin’ – Does It Really Matter Where a Lawyer Sits?” and was moderated by George R. Clark, of Washington, D.C. James C. Coyle, Attorney Regulation Counsel, Colorado Supreme Court, of Denver, Colorado was the other panel member.

January 2015: Jim Ham has been appointed to the State Bar of California’s Commission for the Revision of the Rules of Professional Conduct. The Committee is charged with reviewing and updating California’s Rules of Professional Conduct. The Rules of Professional Conduct are adopted by the California Supreme Court and set minimum discipline standards for attorneys practicing law in California.

January 2015: Ellen Pansky presented an MCLE Ethics training program to the Los Angeles Dependency Lawyers on January 30, 2015. Ms. Pansky addressed several common hypothetical situations and offered advice about the applicable ethical rules to be followed.

January 2014: Jim Ham taught Legal Professions at USC’s Gould School of Law again this spring. The Legal Professions course introduces students to the role of the lawyer in society, history, and organization of the legal profession, alternate career patterns, conflicting duties, the adversary system, equal access to justice, and other issues of ethics and professional responsibility. The course focuses on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, as well as the New York and California rules, together with relevant ethics opinions and leading case law. Jim has been teaching the Legal Professions class to LLM Students at USC since 2008.

July 2012: Pansky Markle Ham LLP is a sponsor of South Pasadena’s Summer Concert Series. The Concerts are free to the public, and are held in Garfield Park in South Pasadena. The Concerts are a beloved local tradition, bringing together hundreds of families and children for outdoor music, picnics and fun for the entire family. May 2012: Jim Ham was a panelist at a seminar sponsored by the Legal Marketing Association and Daily Journal in Century City to discuss how small and medium sized firms can manage their presence in the media and use media to grow their practices in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and rules. Other panelists included David Houston, editor of the Daily Journal and Edvard Pettersson, legal news reporter for Bloomberg.

May 2012: Ellen A. Pansky and James I. Ham attended the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers Sixth International Meeting in Istanbul, Turkey, on May 2-4, 2012. Jim Ham was a panelist on a program focused on conflicts of interest and choice of law in cross-border transactions, entitled “Conflicts and Choice of Law Updates.” Ellen Pansky led the traditional Roundtable Discussion with two accomplished Turkish women attorneys, Bilge Kockaya and Habibe Iyimayi Kayaaslan. The two also met with the Dean of Yeditepe University’s School of Law, and with faculty from both Yeditepe’s law school as well as other Turkish law schools, concerning legal issues of importance in Turkey today. They also were given a tour of Istanbul’s new courthouse by a local prosecutor and Yeditepe University law school graduate.

February 2012: Ellen Pansky participated in the National Association of Women Lawyers 2012 Mid-Year Program, “Reaching For The Stars.” In addition to serving as panelist on the CLE program, “Effective Networking: New Tools In A New Era In Law”, Ms. Pansky served as a member of the programming committee. The compelling day-long event and luncheon honoring Hon. Dorothy W. Nelson and Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. was attended by over 200 people.

February 2012: Jim Ham was reelected First Vice President of the Association of Discipline Defense Counsel for 2012-2013 year. ADDC is the Association for lawyers who represent lawyers and others in disciplinary, admissions and regulatory proceedings before the State Bar of California, the California Supreme Court and other disciplinary agencies.

January 2012:  Ellen Pansky presented on the topic “Special Problems of Waiver of the Attorney-Client Privilege for In-House Counsel” to a private firm.

January 2012:  The State Bar of California has renewed Pansky Markle Ham LLP’s MCLE Multiple Activity Provider approval through December 31, 2014.

December 2011:  Ellen Pansky presented her MCLE program, “If the State Bar Calls, Answer It!” to the Lawyers’ Club of Los Angeles County.

December 2011:  Jim Ham was nominated for reappointment to the Board of California Indian Legal Services (“CILS”).  CILS is a public service law firm that provides legal services to needy California Indian communities and participates in public impact litigation.  Jim serves on the Board’s Executive and Finance Committees, among other Board Committees.

November 2011:  Pansky Markle Ham LLP was a supporter of the Black Women Lawyer’s wonderful soirée at Cicada in downtown Los Angeles.

November 2011:  Pansky Markle Ham LLP was a supporter of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation’s Casino Night.  The Los Angeles County Bar Foundation is “dedicated to improving the administration of justice, advancing the interests of the profession, and serving the public in law-related ways.”  The law firm and its partners each make an annual contribution to support the Foundation.

November 2011:  Jim Ham and Ellen Pansky have been included in Pasadena Magazine’s list of Top Attorneys for 2011, in the areas of Legal Ethics and Law Practice Management, respectively, and attended the Top Attorneys reception held at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena.

September 2011:  Pansky Markle Ham LLP was a Bronze sponsor of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles 2011 Annual Awards and Installation Dinner, and attended the reception held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

August 2011: Pansky Markle Ham LLP was named a “Best Law Firm” by U.S. News and World Report for 2011-2012.
